Mercury evidence of Deccan volcanism driving the Latest Maastrichtian warming event

چکیده

Abstract The timing and ecological impacts of the Deccan Traps large igneous province eruption are vigorously debated. Pre–Cretaceous-Paleogene (KPg) boundary volcanism have been widely identified in marine sediments, but direct evidence terrestrial remains rare. We used mercury concentrations isotopic compositions, a proxy for volcanic activity, to assess on environments. studied two drill cores across KPg eastern China that represent different depositional environments: clastic deposits Jiaolai Basin carbonate Pingyi Basin. Both exhibit strong Hg enrichment prior boundary. Near consistent mass-independent fractionation (MIF) odd-Hg isotopes (odd-MIF) likely indicates volcanogenic source spikes below Odd-MIF likewise suggest with signature lower Δ199Hg values before after spike interval. level can be stratigraphically correlated beginning Latest Maastrichtian warming event (LMWE) is strong, negative carbon-isotope excursion (CIE) both δ13Corg (organic matter) δ13Ccarb (carbonate), suggesting disturbance global carbon cycle induced by major pulse volcanism. Our discovery ter-restrial record pre-KPg provides robust influence during LMWE.

Paleobiogeography of Pseudotextularia Elegans during the Latest Maastrichtian Global Warming Event

A latest Maastrichtian global warming event, which began approximately 450 k.y. and ended about 22 k.y. prior to the K/T boundary, is associated with the poleward migration of the warm-water planktonic foraminifer Pseudotextularia elegans. The warming event was apparently inititated by greenhouse warming due to the main outpouring of the Deccan Traps in India and is now well documented in the N...

Mercury anomaly, Deccan volcanism, and the end-Cretaceous mass extinction

The contribution of the Deccan Traps (west-central India) volcanism in the CretaceousPaleogene (KPg) crisis is still a matter of debate. Recent U-Pb dating of zircons interbedded within the Deccan lava flows indicate that the main eruptive phase (>1.1 × 106 km3 of basalts) initiated ~250 k.y. before and ended ~500 k.y. after the KPg boundary. However, the global geochemical effects of Deccan vo...

Volcanism on Mercury: evidence from the first MESSENGER flyby.

The origin of plains on Mercury, whether by volcanic flooding or impact ejecta ponding, has been controversial since the Mariner 10 flybys (1974-75). High-resolution images (down to 150 meters per pixel) obtained during the first MESSENGER flyby show evidence for volcanic vents around the Caloris basin inner margin and demonstrate that plains were emplaced sequentially inside and adjacent to nu...

Mercury, volcanism, and mass extinctions.

Understanding the causes and timings of mass extinctions are important for our understanding of the evolution of life on Earth and how major biogeochemical cycles have been and can be perturbed. Four of the five biggest mass extinctions (1) are associated with large igneous provinces (LIPS), which are the most voluminous volcanic events on Earth, but whether LIPS triggered the extinctions is di...
